Multifocal / Toric Lens Implant Q&A

What is a toric lens implant?

A toric lens implant is for patients with astigmatism. If you suffer from astigmatism, you have an irregularly shaped cornea, and that contributes to blurry vision. It’s quite common to suffer either myopia (nearsightedness) or hyperopia (farsightedness) along with astigmatism.

Toric lens implants correct nearsightedness or farsightedness as well as astigmatism. Standard toric lens implants only correct vision at one distance.

How does toric lens insertion work?

Because your astigmatism alters the shape of your cornea, your Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologist takes extra steps to make sure the lens is placed in the correct orientation to correct the visual disturbance.

Immediately before surgery, your ophthalmologist places temporary marks on your cornea to indicate the most severe areas of astigmatism.

Once the cataract is gone, your surgeon aligns those marks with indicators on the IOL for perfect placement and optimal astigmatism correction.

What is a multifocal lens implant?

A multifocal lens implant has a series of rings in the lens, with two or more prescriptions. Multifocal lens implants are like bifocals or trifocals, permanently within your eye.

Multifocal lens implants are often a good choice if you suffer from both myopia or hyperopia and age-related focus problems (presbyopia). Standard multifocal lenses don’t correct astigmatism, but there’s now a premium multifocal/toric lens that can do so.

What are multifocal/toric lens implants?

Multifocal/toric lens implants are a hybrid of multifocal and toric lens implants. They’re the first type of IOL to correct astigmatism along with multiple other vision problems at one time.

If you want an IOL that allows you to be free from reading glasses or other vision correction, a multifocal/toric IOL might be exactly what you’ve been waiting for.

To ensure an ideal fit and maximum function, your Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologist uses the same practices they’d use with a standard toric IOL. This gives you sharp vision at all distances, in spite of refractive errors.

Cataracts and refractive errors don’t have to keep you from enjoying clear vision at all distances. Use the online scheduler or call the Eye Care & Surgery office nearest you to learn more about multifocal/toric lens implants now.
