How are manual and laser cataract surgery different?

In manual cataract surgery, your Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologist uses a scalpel to perform all parts of the treatment. 

In laser cataract surgery, your ophthalmologist uses a femtosecond laser such as the CATALYS® or the LenSX® to do all, or nearly all, of the things previously done with a scalpel. 

Laser cataract surgery offers some impressive advantages, including added precision and more accurate placement of the replacement lens, the intraocular lens (IOL). 

Typically, laser cataract surgery is also faster than manual cataract surgery, and recovery tends to be quicker, but in the highly capable hands of the Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologists, both manual and laser cataract surgery are safe and reliable. 

What kind of IOL do I need?

Eye Care & Surgery offers a wide range of IOLs to meet all patient needs. Prior to cataract removal surgery, your ophthalmologist performs a series of eye measurements and discusses your lifestyle needs to determine what type and power of IOL will work best for you. There are options for everyone, including:

Monofocal

The standard type of IOL, monofocal IOLs correct nearsightedness or farsightedness. Then, you use eyeglasses for any other correction you need. For example, many cataract surgery patients choose a monofocal lens set for distance vision and then wear reading glasses for close-up vision. 

Toric

Toric IOLs are for those patients with astigmatism. A toric IOL, like a standard monofocal IOL, corrects vision at one distance. 

Multifocal

Multifocal IOLs have multiple rings throughout the lens, with different prescriptions in them. They’re like bifocals or trifocals in eyeglasses terms. Your eyes adapt to looking in the right area for the task at hand, whether it’s driving or reading.

What is recovery like after cataract surgery?

You typically start seeing better within as little as a few days, but it may take up to one month to achieve optimal vision correction and healing after cataract surgery. Some minor itching and discomfort are normal, but it usually fades within days. 

Your Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologist will prescribe eye drops so be sure to use it exactly as directed for a comfortable and smooth recovery. 

A day or two after surgery, you have a follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist. Most patients with non-physical jobs get back to work and their usual routine within days.
