What is an eye infection?

Bacteria, viruses, or fungi can get into your eyes and cause infection. Any part of your eye can get infected, including the eyelid, cornea, or conjunctiva. Eye infections can develop in one or both of your eyes. 

Some of the most common eye infections are conjunctivitis, keratitis, and styes.  One type of conjunctivitis, also known as “pink eye”, is an infection of the conjunctiva. It’s called “pink eye” because it often gives your eye a pink tint. 

Keratitis is a corneal infection. This is one of the most common types of eye infections for contact lens wearers. A stye is a painful bump on your eyelid, near your eyelashes. Bacteria in an oil gland in the skin of the eyelid margin cause styes.

What are the symptoms of an eye infection?

The symptoms of eye infection depend on the part of your eye that’s infected. Common symptoms include:

• Itchiness
• Pain
• Burning sensation
• Watery eyes
• Light sensitivity
• Redness
• Feeling like there’s an object in the eye

If you wear contact lenses, you may have trouble continuing to wear them if you have an eye infection. Some people notice their vision gets blurry when they have an eye infection.

If someone you know has conjunctivitis, try not to touch them. Conjunctivitis is one of the most contagious eye infections and can easily spread through physical contact.
