Cataracts Q&A

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a condition in which your natural crystalline lens of the eye grows cloudy, yellow, or brown. When this happens, the lens blocks and scatters light, making vision very blurry.

With help from the Eye Care & Surgery team of providers, cataracts won’t take your sight permanently.

What are the signs that I have cataracts?

Cataract symptoms can develop quite slowly. You might have a cataract for years before it begins causing trouble. Some common symptoms of cataracts include:

  • Blurry vision
  • Colors look less brilliant
  • Glare
  • Light sensitivity
  • Poor night vision
  • Frequent vision prescription changes

The Eye Care & Surgery surgeons check for signs of cataracts during your comprehensive eye exam. If you notice symptoms of cataracts, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. The sooner you take care of your cataracts, the less time that you’ll have to struggle with decreased vision.

How are cataracts treated?

The best solution for cataracts is surgical removal. The cataract surgery specialists at Eye Care & Surgery have extensive experience in both traditional and laser cataract surgery with femtosecond lasers like the CATALYS® and the LenSX®.

The laser minimizes the need for a scalpel, increases precision, and allows for ideal placement of your replacement eye lens, the intraocular lens (IOL).

After your Eye Care & Surgery ophthalmologist removes your cataract, they place a lens implant, or IOL in the eye to restore vision.

Monofocal IOLs correct vision at one distance, but you will need to continue using glasses if you have more than one vision issue. There are also toric IOLs, which are monofocal IOLs that correct astigmatism.

Multifocal IOLs have multiple zones within the lens to address two problems, for example, both presbyopia and farsightedness. Your eyes adjust to looking through the lens zone needed for vision depending on the situation.

The Eye Care & Surgery team is here to help you eliminate cataracts and regain your sharp vision again. Trust the expert ophthalmologists for the best in state-of-the-art cataract surgery and IOLs! Click online scheduling or call the office nearest you to book now.
