Eye Care & Surgery

Ophthalmologists & Optometrists located in New York City, NY & The Bronx, NY

Cataracts cloud the lens of your eye, making vision blurry. Lens implants, or intraocular lenses (IOLs), are artificial lenses that are crystal clear. They replace the clouded, natural lens to restore vision once the cataract is removed. The cataract surgeons at Eye Care & Surgery are experts in cataract and lens implant procedures. Located in New York City, Eye Care & Surgery has two New York City locations in Washington Heights in Manhattan and another near the Grand Concourse in the Bronx, right across the street from Yankee Stadium. Lens Implants

What are lens implants, or intraocular lenses (IOLs)?

You see through a lens in each eye. The lens is behind the pupil, and it sends the light that comes into your eye to your retina, which then transmits it to your brain. Lenses are clear when you are young, but as you age, the proteins in them change, and they can get cloudy.

The clouded lens is called a cataract, and it can blur vision or give it a brownish tint. Cataracts can cause blindness, but cataract surgery is a popular option to repair vision. Cataract surgery includes replacing the cloudy lens in your eye with a lens implant.

Lens implants or intraocular lenses (IOLs) are medical devices that the ophthalmologists at Eye Care & Surgery surgically place inside your eye. The implant replaces the damaged lens and gives you a clearer vision.

How do lens implants work?

An intraocular lens implant (IOL) is an artificial lens used to replace your natural lens. Lens implants are made of clear, flexible plastic. They’re very small, usually about one third the size of a dime.

You receive a lens implant or intraocular lens (IOL that is individually tailored to your needs. Just like prescription eyeglasses, the implant has your prescription to give you the best possible vision. A lens implant directs the light coming into your eye to your retina and brain without obstruction.

During cataract surgery, your Eye Care & Surgery doctor removes the cloudy cataract lens in your eye. They then insert the lens implant or intraocular lens (IOL) in its place. Cataract surgery is extremely common, with about three million procedures done each year.

What types of lens implants are available?

Eye Care & Surgery is proud to offer a multitude of lens implant or intraocular lens (IOL) options for patients with cataracts. Standard monofocal lens implants or intraocular lenses (IOLs) have only one focal point and will only correct either distance, intermediate, or reading vision, depending on your needs.

People with standard lens implants typically need glasses for either distance, intermediate or reading vision, depending on what distance was corrected with the lens implant or intraocular lens (IOL). For patients with astigmatism, standard lens implants may not work.

Premium lens implants or intraocular lenses (IOLs) will limit your need for any type of glasses after your cataract surgery.

Depending on your individual needs, your ophthalmologist determines which type of lens implant or intraocular lens (IOL) is best for you. Common lenses offered include:

  • Monofocal IOLs
  • Toric IOLs
  • Multifocal IOLs
  • Multifocal Toric IOLs

You can have crisp, clear vision again with the help of basic or premium intraocular lens implants. If you have cataracts, visit Eye Care & Surgery for the best cataract treatment available. Call the office or request a consultation online today.
